This will be the last week for after school programming. Communicate to students that homework hubs and all after school programs will end this Thursday. Marla is planning a district-wide after school event for Wednesday, June 9. There will be a large number of students from other school coming here for this activity which will run until 8:00.
Maggie will be sending out information on end of year procedures and issue to help make the last week of school as smooth as possible. Some things like locker clean out will be handled on team
Our plan is to finalize as much of the leadership information as possible for next year at our final staff meeting on June 7.
On Wednesday Mark Hill and Craing LeSuer will meet with students from Milwood who are identified for summer school. Steve will put out a list of names of the students who must attend. There are two components to summer school, remediation and extension. The students in remediation have failed their classes for the most part and the students identified for extension are grade level students who are being considered for advanced placement if they put in extra work this summer. I believe that many students do not know they are on these lists, so it is important that 6th hour teachers review the lists and see that the students come to the cafeteria when we call for them.
We will be making decisions on summer programming probably at the end of this week. Some of the extension programming we are offering to 6th and 7th graders has low enrollment. We will have to cut these programs if enrollment doesn't pick up. The program with incoming 5th graders has very healthy numbers.
We still have a fire drill to complete this week to reach our required numbers.
We will pay out on the planner challenge this week on Wednesday and Thursday. Mary will be in the cafeteria to provide students with their incentive and to let them enter the planner raffle. We had discussed Social Studies teachers helping with this, but have decided to just keep in the cafeteria at lunch. Please remind students to bring their planners to lunch on Wednesday and Thursday.
Vickie is helping get things in order for our 8th grade farewell, I know she was needed the information on all the students being nominated for recognition. If you haven't done this yet please get on the master list that was passed around.

We had a broadcast on Friday, but we had a minor tech glitch and did not push the broadcast button so nothing was aired. I'll run the names of winners from Friday on the scrolling announcements this week.
We will run an assembly schedule on both Thursday and Friday to accommodate the Talent Show. This is a tier 1 event and your team should prepare appropriately. Students will need their overdues returned and an ID to attend. Your team can decide how to use the assembly time the day your not attending. See me if you have questions about this arrangement.
Tamela passed out a PD information sheet that outlined all the PD taking place this summer. We will need every teacher to respond to it as it will be the way we decide to keep or cancel session currently in our summer plan. Team leaders should bring this information back to teams.
I want to remind everyone as we get closer to the end of the year that we will hold final exams for students on the last two 1/2 days of school. Every teacher should plan to have a final exam, and I will need a copy of everyone's exam also.
Our PBS team will be out of the building on Wednesday as part of annual data review.
A reminder that Tina has given each team cum cards that needed to be completed and she gave you a completion date. We have to have student files ready to move by the end of school.

Maggie, Kai and Vanessa will lead professional development on Monday. I will be with Tamela, Mark, Mary, Rana and Carlotta attending the National Magnet Schools Conference. We will make a presentation on our Magnet effort to date.
We will be AIMS testing through the week, there is a schedule developed and we will do make-ups the week of May 10th.
Teachers will receive a copy of the list of targeted intervention students and the data that was used to make that determination. Please look it over and flag any student who you think might be inappropriately placed on this list. Do not share this information with students. Students will receive notification from central office of their status as an intervention identified student.
Don't forget Tuesday is an election day, we would have extreme difficulty if this renewal didn't pass.
There were a number of issues that surfaced during last week's lockdown drill. Probably the biggest concern was that students in some classes did not move out of sight from the hallway and there was too much noise being made.
We will hold an orientation session on Wednesday, May 12 from 7-8 p.m. for incoming 6th graders and their parents. If you are able to be present and assist this evening please let me know so we can plan accordingly.

We will have the mobile dental clinic at our school Tuesday through Friday, to provide service to students who were not serviced earlier this year. Individual students would be pulled out of class for this.
Maggie will touch base with 6th grade team leaders. She will schedule time to meet with students on both teams over school routines and finishing the year strong.
I sent everyone a copy of the letters and the criteria for intervention programs for next year. Please be sure you have read it. I think it is still not totally clear and I will be asking for some clarification. We will be talking with students yet this year about what their schedule will look like next year.
Ignite is the transition program we have been doing with Loy Norrix the past few years with our 8th graders . Loy Norrix's Ignite team will be here again this year on April 29, May 7 and May 14. Steve will provide information about the exact time and classes the students will visit. In addition we are working on a similar process with our 6th and 7th graders to help with the transition of 5th graders to Milwood. Our Ignite team will visit elementary schools this Tuesday.
We are scheduled for a lock down drill this Thursday. Once we make an announcement over the PA we ask that all doors be locked and that teachers use the red and green cards to put under the door to tell us if your classroom is okay. We will put the cards in envelops and they will be fixed to your classroom door this week. Green means everything is okay. Red means there is an injury or a problem.
Please respond to Tamela by the end of this week if you'll be taking part in the ERACE training in June. We will open up slots to the district after Friday.
We follow a PM schedule on Friday morning. There is no advisory this day, I will do the drawing at the beginning of 4th period. I'll attach a copy of the 1/2 day schedule to email.

We discussed in our leadership meeting just prior to break the plan to provide one last planner for this school year. We will expect that students are able to make the use of this planner through the end of school. We would provide some type of reinforcement school-wide to students who accomplish this goal. We discussed the need for the planner to be a part of regular classroom routines, like recording the homework task into the planner. Planners should be delivered by Wednesday of this week.
We continue to communicate the homework policy to parents, please be sure that you are following this policy and are assigning homework on the appropriate nights. This is work done out of class.
We will run an assembly schedule on Friday to accommodate for the staff/student basketball game. Let James know if you are able to participate in the game. Spirit week activities all week long.
We allow students use of the office telephone before school, at lunch and after school. Any other use of the office phone should be on pass from a teacher. Students may not use the phone during the school day without a pass from a teacher.
We do not have a staff meeting this Monday. We will have department meetings this Wednesday. Core staff will meet in room 415, elective staff will meet with their district colleagues.
Building team will meet this Wednesday
Our author visit is coming up next week. Ben Mikaelsen will be with us on Monday and Tuesday. Monday he will be speaking with all of the students in grade level sessions in the library. We will share a schedule with staff this week.
At Leadership last week we heard from Milwood's representative on the Bond committee about the upcoming bond vote. Like always this vote has huge implications for our district and our school. We would see additional classroom spaces added to our building and we would be spared even more painful budget cuts. Each team was asked to do gather some support for this effort.

It is our turn for Promise Week, all the middle schools will conduct a similar set of experiences for all of the students in the school. Please pay attention to the schedules and the plans that have been created. If there are any conflicts or issues we haven't anticipated please lets us know. There are activities planned during the extended advisory periods please refer to the CPR plan.
6th grade teams should be in the cafeteria by 8:45 for a general information session prior to departing for WMU. T-shirts should have been passed out in advisory. 8th graders will be called down after 6th grade departs as close to 9:00 as possible.
Custodians will be here during the days of spring break, if anyone is needing to get in.
Deb will send you an e-mail with with an attachment for conference reporting. Please calculate you conference attendance rates and return the report to Deb not later than Wednesday. You can still hold conferences if parents were not able to attend last week.
I will return your math facts data to everyone who turned their data into me. I just want you to keep some type of record so that you can help students develop some type of sense of their progress. We will quantify the improvement toward the end of the year as a building.
I had a request by parents to put the topic of "texting in class" as a discussion point at parent advisory this week. I am not aware of this as a huge problem, put if you are experiencing this issue other wise would you please let me know.
Teams will be getting some information about the upcoming bond. Our parent representative is Mrs. Kistler. This is a hugely important issue. IF the bond did not pass in our district there would be increased cuts to our programs. There is no tax increase with this issue as it amounts to a renewal. We all have to do what we can to see that this information gets out.

The County Health Department will be here on Tuesday and Thursday doing vision screening of all of our 7th graders. We will have to call students out of class for a brief time to complete this task.
I will present information to KEA about staffing and the budget at the KEA meeting on Monday. I will present the same information to any other staff on Tuesday at 2:30 in the library. We are still working through this issue but I can provide the most current information we are working with, in light of the KEA and administration agreement to move to a 6 period schedule.
A copy of your conferences schedule should have been sent to Deb in the office so that secretaries can respond to any phone calls about conference times.
We are looking at running EdPerformance reports which could be added to the student portfolio at conference time.
Counselors will distribute 3rd trimester schedules to advisory teachers on Monday morning. Team leaders were informed of the plan for planners for the remainder of the year. You should have students write out their new schedule and advisory teachers should have a copy. It is not uncommon for students to forget. Remember don't send students to the student center unless they have drastic flaw in their schedule.
We are pushing the student/staff basketball game back to April 9, because of Promise Week. The students will have a spirit week leading up to the game on Friday.
We will have visitors in the building Monday afternoon. A middle school looking at PBS systems will tour and meet with us.
We welcome Nicole Coleman back from her maternity leave Monday morning

Literacy Night is this Wednesday from 6:00 - 8:00. This is a mandatory event for all KEA staff as it serves as the spring open house date. Tamela will provide everyone with an outline of where they will be needed and supervision responsibilities. There is still much to do, if you can help after school on Monday or Tuesday, let Elisha or Tamela know.
Wednesday is our monthly date for building team. This month's building team will run all day long and those staff involved will be unavailable throughout the day.
The scheduling letter should have gone home with students last week. It is very important that all staff read their advisory plans carefully. Because we have not had a staff meeting in some time we rely on staff following written directions. There have been directions about collecting and getting work samples to advisory teachers so portfolios have examples for students to share with their parents.
Thursday we will schedule siblings during the advisory time
We will follow an assembly schedule on Friday. We have a tier 1 assembly event at 1:30. We will dismiss student over the PA from their 7th period class. Students should sit in designated grade level areas. I'll attach a copy of the schedule to announcements.
This coming Saturday is our first Milwood Macker, this event is part of 5th grade recruiting effort and will start at 9:00. Dr. Rice is suppose to stop by and present the end of tournament awards. We still need help/volunteers on Saturday. If you can give an hour or two please let me know.
EdPerformance testing begins this week. Melanie put out a testing schedule and we will do our best to follow it. It is important that students understand that placement decisions are made based on the performance on this test.
We have a merit awards program this Friday, any staff who are able to stop in during the program are encouraged to.

I understand that the advisory plan for this week includes information to the students about how our school can contribute to the relief effort. Please be sure that the students get and understand all of this information.
We begin a new marking period this week, please remind students in advisory that the data from this marking period will serve as the basis for the student-led conference.
By this Friday I will need a copy of everyone's lesson plan for Monday, February 15. I have to submit them to central office so they can be compiled in the master documents that will be used during our evaluation.
I will continue to try and get around to advisory classes and see how you are conducting the all school read. I am taking short video clips in some instances to demonstrate how it is being done differently in classrooms. This may be used in the magnet evaluation process.
A reminder that the building team will meet this Wednesday to discuss interventions for our tier 3 and tier 2 students.

We are working on our plans for a 3/3 basketball tournament for incoming 5th graders. It is part of our orientation process and is scheduled for Saturday, March 6. We'll need help running this event. If any staff members can give a couple of hours on that day please let me know.
Everyone must have their grades posted by 3:00 on Friday. Report cards will be generated over the weekend. See Susan or Steve if you have any questions over grading.

E-mail sent from MESSA Wellness Coach -
"My name is Sarah Starry, the MESSA Wellness Coach that will be coming to your school this coming Wednesday (January 13th) to complete individual assessments for the MESSA Wellness Program. I looked at the current schedule for Wednesday and noticed no one had signed up yet. Is it possible for you to remind the staff that I will be onsite that day? I know each school has different methods of relaying information, so whatever works best for your staff would be great."
Christine McCue joins us as a long term sub in Lisa Dewey's absence. David Meisling starts Monday as the day custodian. Tina Jackson will begin on January 25th as a new secretary.
Aims testing begins this week. We will have a group of substitute teachers along with our paraeducators helping with this task. We decided their was just too much going on in advisory to add this task.
Our magnet consultants, Rick and Helen, will be with us on Monday and Tuesday this week assisting with school improvement planning and visiting classrooms.
We are working on the all staff having access to the pinnacle administrative viewer so that progress reports can be easily pulled for your advisory, if we don't get it done we will print hard copy for you to pass out. Students should be seeing these reports on data Fridays.
Our staff meeting on Monday will be 1 hour.
